Dog lovers will be familiar with the King Charles Spaniel, but now King Charles himself has a spaniel of his own—a Lagotto Romagnolo named Snuff.
The 76-year-old monarch is said to be “besotted” with the puppy, his first dog in over 20 years. Snuff arrived last month, marking the first time Charles has had a canine companion since his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Tigga, who was gifted to him in 1984 and passed away in 2002.
A source told The Sun: “Charles is besotted with his puppy. He hasn’t had one since Tigga. The breed is a truffle-hunter, and since Charles enjoys mushroom foraging, they have a lot in common.”
Lagotto Romagnolos belong to the spaniel family but stand out with their curly, medium-length coats. The Kennel Club describes them as “lively, intelligent, and affectionate” dogs, well-suited to country life. Originally bred in 16th-century northern Italy to retrieve ducks, they are now primarily used for truffle hunting.
The news of Snuff’s arrival comes shortly after Queen Camilla adopted an eight-week-old rescue puppy, Moley, from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, where she is a patron. Camilla, 77, lost her beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Beth, in November and recently shared that Moley is “a bit of everything” and “looks just like a mole.”
It is understood that Snuff was a private gift to King Charles, with no connection to the King and Queen’s upcoming visit to Ravenna, Italy.
