Calls to Delay Trump’s State Visit Until Assurances on Ukraine Are Given

Politicians and military leaders have urged the UK government to put Donald Trump’s state visit on hold following his heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

During the Oval Office confrontation, Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three,” leading to calls for assurances about the U.S. commitment to Ukraine before proceeding with the visit. Critics warn that hosting Trump now could embarrass King Charles.

However, a source close to Trump cautioned that rescinding the invitation would be “very unwise,” suggesting instead that Prime Minister Keir Starmer should encourage Zelensky to apologize.

The controversy comes as:

  • King Charles prepares to host Zelensky at Sandringham.
  • Starmer welcomes European leaders to a crisis summit in London.
  • Nigel Farage, a Trump ally, criticizes the White House spat, warning it plays into Vladimir Putin’s hands.

Some officials advocate delaying the visit. Former Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood stated it would be “inappropriate” for the King to host Trump if U.S. policy shifts away from supporting Ukraine. Former MI6 chief Richard Dearlove suggested “letting the dust settle” before proceeding.

Speaking inside Number 10, the Prime Minister firmly reassured the Ukrainian president: 'Let me just say that you're very, very welcome here in Downing Street'

Yet others argue the visit should go ahead. Constitutional expert Sir Vernon Bogdanor warned that canceling would be an “unprecedented snub” that could harm UK interests.

Despite the backlash, No. 10 insists the visit will proceed, emphasizing that unity among Western allies is crucial for Ukraine’s security.
