Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis never wanted a traditional Hollywood mansion. Instead, they spent years designing a home that truly reflected their values—simple, sustainable, and family-focused. Surprisingly, the entire structure was built around one unexpected feature from their previous home.
A Barn-Style Home with a Modern Twist
Perched on a six-acre hilltop, their home resembles a repurposed old barn. However, every detail was meticulously planned to create a space that balances rustic charm with modern comfort.
“We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades and was then converted into a home. But it also had to feel modern and relevant,” Kutcher explained.
The property features a main house, a guesthouse that doubles as an entertainment barn, and a barbecue pavilion, all arranged along a central axis to maximize the scenic views.
Designed by renowned architect Howard Backen, the home blends traditional and contemporary elements. Reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and large glass windows give it a timeless yet modern aesthetic. The couple was deeply involved in every decision, from the size of the beams to the texture of the materials. Interior designer Vicky Charles added refined touches, ensuring the space felt warm, stylish, and functional.
The Unexpected Chandelier That Inspired It All
One of the home’s most surprising design choices revolves around a chandelier from their previous house. Kunis once described it as “obnoxious” and had never been fond of it. Instead of discarding the fixture, the couple decided to design their new home around it.
“How do we make the chandelier less obnoxious? Let’s put a barn around it,” Kunis recalled. Now, the striking fixture hangs in the center of their home, creating a bold contrast against the otherwise understated design.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Beyond aesthetics, Kutcher and Kunis prioritized sustainability. Their home is fully solar-powered, generating more energy than it consumes. They also dug a well to irrigate their land, allowing them to grow their own crops and reduce reliance on external resources.
“If the world around you isn’t in order, it’s hard to get your brain in order. When we’re in our home, the world just makes sense,” Kutcher once said, emphasizing the importance of an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
A Home Designed for Family Life
When construction began, Kunis was pregnant with their first child. This milestone influenced many of their design decisions, ensuring their home would evolve alongside their growing family. Today, their children—Wyatt, 8, and Dimitri, 10—enjoy a space designed for play, exploration, and togetherness.
Rather than creating a formal estate, they wanted a home where their children could roam freely and experience nature firsthand. Every detail was chosen with family life in mind, making the space both functional and inviting.
Kunis’ Dedication to Family
Years before completing their dream home, Kunis took on another meaningful project—renovating her parents’ condo. Knowing they would never ask for an upgrade themselves, she convinced them to let her transform their space.
The renovation focused on creating an open-concept design, improving functionality and interaction. When Kunis unveiled the finished condo, her mother was overwhelmed with emotion, shedding tears of joy, while her father beamed with pride. The project was featured on “My Houzz,” with Kutcher present to celebrate the transformation.
Keeping Their Family Life Private
Despite being public figures, Kutcher and Kunis are highly protective of their children’s privacy. They have chosen not to share photos of Wyatt and Dimitri online, believing their kids should have control over their public presence when they are older.
Though they occasionally attend public events as a family, they generally keep their personal lives out of the spotlight. Kutcher has even made career choices to prioritize time at home, once taking a pay cut to move a film production closer to his family.
Teaching Their Children About Their Heritage
The couple is also committed to teaching their children about their cultural roots. Kunis, who was born in Ukraine, admitted that she hadn’t always emphasized her heritage at home. However, after recent global events, she and Kutcher shifted their approach.
“It seemed like overnight we both turned to our kids and said, ‘You are half Ukrainian, half American,'” Kunis shared, emphasizing the importance of embracing diverse backgrounds.
She also ensures her children learn and speak her mother tongue, allowing them to communicate with their grandparents and stay connected to their heritage.
A Home Built to Last
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have crafted a home that perfectly embodies their values—sustainability, simplicity, and family. It’s a space where their children can grow, where old memories are honored, and where new ones are created. Their barn-style home is more than just a residence—it’s a reflection of who they are and the life they want to build together.
