Japan is gearing up to showcase its depth in figure skating at the 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston, where spots for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games will be determined.
Leading the charge is Kaori Sakamoto, the three-time reigning world champion, who recently secured her fourth consecutive national title. Excited to be part of the team, Sakamoto emphasized the importance of the event, stating her determination to be at her best and prove Japan’s strength on the international stage.
Sakamoto, who aims to become the first woman in 65 years to win four straight world titles, will be joined by Mone Chiba and Wakaba Higuchi in the women’s singles event. Chiba, despite finishing fourth at nationals, earned her spot after an impressive Grand Prix season with silver medals at the NHK Trophy, Cup of China, and Grand Prix Final. Meanwhile, Higuchi, a 2022 Olympian, secured her place following her first career Grand Prix victory at Skate America and a second-place finish at the Grand Prix de France. Chiba expressed her excitement and motivation to help Japan secure three Olympic quota spots.
On the men’s side, Yuma Kagiyama, a three-time world silver medalist, is eager to finally claim gold after winning his first national title. Confident and motivated, Kagiyama is prepared to challenge Ilia Malinin, the strong favorite for the world championship. Joining him in Boston will be Shun Sato and Tatsuya Tsuboi, both looking to contribute to Japan’s overall success.
With Olympic qualification on the line, Japan’s skaters are focused on delivering top performances at the world championships in March. As the nation continues to establish itself as a dominant force in figure skating, their athletes are determined to leave their mark and secure maximum spots for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
