Actors in major film franchises usually have a good grasp of their roles, but Gwyneth Paltrow was just as surprised as everyone else to learn she had appeared in seven Marvel movies.
Despite her long-standing career in Hollywood, Paltrow only recently realized the extent of her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, the actress was visibly stunned when told she had portrayed Pepper Potts in seven Marvel films, spanning her time in the Iron Man and Avengers series.
Her genuine shock has since gone viral, leaving fans amused and baffled in equal measure.

It all transpired after she was watching clips of her most memorable roles, and as it turns out, she’d forgotten about a lot of her work.
When the 52-year-old was shown a scene from 2008’s Iron Man where she played the titular CEO of Stark Industries – and would later become his love interest – the interviewer asked her: “Did you ever imagine that when you signed on you would end up in seven films?”
That’s when Paltrow immediately couldn’t believe that what she was hearing was correct.
She replied: “That can’t be right. I can’t have been in seven. Is that true?”
Those who watched her completely forget about being in so many Marvel movies were losing their minds in the comments.
One person wrote: “I ❤ how she doesn’t know what films she is in.”
Someone else said: “Listen no apologies. I love Gwyneth. and I think she’s charming. I think she’s funny.”
Another said: “she knows nothing about the mcu still and i love it. healthy distance to her job.”
As it turns out, she forgot she was in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“One time I didn’t realize I was in Spider-Man. I was like doing a scene with Robert and Jon Favreau so I thought it was a cameo,” she explained. “They’re like, ‘It’s another…’ Anyway. And it turned out I was in ‘Spider-Man’ and I didn’t even realize.”
Paltrow appeared on Favreau and chef Roy Choi’s Netflix cooking series The Chef Show in 2019 where she was seen forgetting about her time on the flick.
“We weren’t in ‘Spider-Man,” Paltrow said.
“Yes, we were. You were in ‘Spider-Man,’” Favreau replied.
Not only does she not keep up with her own movies, but she also doesn’t keep up with the movies that occurred after her.
When she was asked about her thoughts on appearing in Captain America: Brave New World, she replied: “What is that? Oh, no. I don’t think so. I think I would’ve known by now. I may… we’ll see. I don’t know.”
As it turns out, the reason Paltrow didn’t know she was in Spider Man was because of the way Marvel conducts its productions.
She said: “They keep it all very top secret, you know. They think they’re the CIA or something over there. That it’s like national secrets. Like who’s doing what and who. That’s why I didn’t know I was in ‘Spider-Man!’ ‘Cause they never said. There were no signs that said ‘Spider-Man’. The script didn’t say ‘Spider-Man’. It’s all a secret.”
In total, Paltrow has been in Iron Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
