New Trump Approval Ratings Reveal Surprising Support for Third-Term Run

Americans have weighed in on whether Donald Trump should run for office again—and the results are raising eyebrows.

While the U.S. Constitution currently prohibits a third presidential term, Trump has continued to tease the idea ever since returning to the White House in January.

Under the 22nd Amendment, a president cannot be elected more than twice. However, U.S. Representative Andy Ogles has proposed an amendment that would revise the law to read:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms…”

Ogles argues that because Trump’s presidencies were non-consecutive, he should be eligible for another consecutive term—potentially allowing him to serve until 2032.

While Trump and Ogles may be in favor of the idea, public opinion has remained uncertain—until now.

New approval ratings released by the Pew Research Center show that only 40% of respondents currently approve of Trump’s performance, a 7-point drop since February. These numbers arrive just days before Trump marks his 100th day back in office on Wednesday, April 30.

Despite the constitutional hurdles and slipping approval, the conversation around a third Trump term isn’t going away anytime soon.

People were also asked for their opinions on the President’s controversial tariff hikes, which have caused turmoil in the global stock market in recent weeks. Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they disapprove of the increases.

In a separate poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, participants were asked whether Donald Trump should run for a third term.

“Three-quarters of respondents said Trump should not run for a third term in office — a path Trump has expressed interest in, despite the U.S. Constitution prohibiting it,” Reuters reported.

“Even among Republican respondents, a majority — 53% — said Trump should not seek a third term,” the report added.

While Trump and some of his closest allies appear eager for another presidential bid, the broader American public seems far less enthusiastic.
