New York Governor Issues Urgent Update as Massive Wildfires Rage Through Long Island

A devastating wildfire has burned nearly 400 acres on New York’s Long Island, prompting a swift response from up to 80 fire departments.

Officials confirmed that 600 personnel were involved in containing the blaze. In a recent update, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the fire is now 80% contained, according to Suffolk County officials.

The Westhampton Pines Fire ignited on Saturday afternoon and has since been fully contained, with no visible flames remaining. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Speaking to NBC News, officials expressed optimism about gaining full control over the fire soon, though concerns remain. “The fire is not the same threat it was before, but it’s still alarming,” one source stated.

In response to the dry conditions fueling the wildfire, Governor Hochul has imposed a temporary ban on most outdoor activities involving fire, including camping, farming, and cooking, across Long Island and parts of the Hudson Valley. Small backyard fire pits, campfires, and contained cooking fires are exempt.

This emergency restriction will remain in effect until March 16, when the state’s annual outdoor fire prohibition begins.

Strong winds and fallen trees contributed to the rapid spread of the Westhampton Pines Fire, sending thick plumes of smoke across the region. Officials continue to urge caution as firefighting efforts persist.
