Legendary Hollywood actor Gene Hackman has passed away at the age of 95, along with his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, who was 63.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that the couple was found deceased in their Santa Fe home. While the cause of death remains unknown, authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected. Their pet dog was also found dead alongside them.
Mendoza refrained from commenting on the possible time of death but stated, “All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant.”
Hackman, widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, is best remembered for his roles as Lex Luthor in Superman, Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven, and Jimmy Doyle in The French Connection. His career spanned over a hundred roles, earning him two Academy Awards and a place in cinematic history.
Despite his success, Hackman was known for valuing his privacy. In 2004, he announced his retirement from acting, choosing to step away from Hollywood and settle in New Mexico. At the time, he told reporters, “I haven’t held a press conference to announce retirement, but yes, I’m not going to act any longer. I really don’t want to do it any longer.”
Rumors suggested that stress played a role in his decision to retire, but Hackman never publicly addressed these claims.
Hackman and Arakawa’s relationship began in the mid-1980s, and they married in 1991. He previously clarified that his marriage to Arakawa was not the result of infidelity, saying, “By the way, I did not leave my real-life wife for a younger woman. We just drifted apart. We lost sight of each other. When you work in this business, marriage takes a great deal of work and love.”
Following the tragic news, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the beloved actor and his wife.
One Twitter user wrote, “RIP Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa. Found dead, marking the end of an era in cinema.”
Another added, “Honoring the memory of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa. Their impact on cinema and music will not be forgotten.”
A third user shared, “That is awful news. Truly one of the best actors Hollywood ever gave us.”
The loss of Gene Hackman marks the passing of a true Hollywood legend, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy in film.
