A couple once celebrated for their record-breaking kiss has revealed they are no longer together.
Ekkachai Tiranarat and his wife, Laksana, from Thailand, made history in 2013 when they locked lips for an astonishing 58 hours and 35 minutes, securing a Guinness World Record.
Speaking on the BBC Sounds podcast Witness History, Ekkachai confirmed their split but reflected fondly on their achievement.
“I am very proud. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he shared with host Megan Jones. “We spent a long time together, and I’m focusing on the good memories.”
The grueling competition had strict rules: couples had to remain kissing at all times—even during bathroom breaks—and could only drink water by passing it mouth-to-mouth. Ekkachai admitted the experience was far from enjoyable.
This was not their first record-breaking attempt. The couple initially set the world record in 2011, enduring a 46-hour, 24-minute kiss. They hadn’t originally planned to enter but were drawn in by the prize: 50,000 Thai Baht (around £1,200 at the time) and a diamond ring.
However, the contest proved to be a true test of endurance. Competing in a crowded shopping mall in Pattaya, Thailand, Ekkachai felt lightheaded early on. But as other contestants dropped out, he and Laksana pushed through sheer exhaustion.
Despite the brutal conditions, they emerged victorious—only to lose their title the following year when another couple surpassed their record.
Determined to reclaim their title, they returned in 2013 with a strategy to endure even longer. After 58 hours and 35 minutes, they succeeded, setting a record that still stands today.
Guinness World Records later retired the longest kiss category, citing safety concerns and rule changes. As a result, Ekkachai and Laksana remain the undisputed champions.
Even though their love story has come to an end, their place in history endures.
